The Atlantic hurricane season is in full swing, and residents across Florida are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Debby and the devastation it will bring. It turns out the storm also produced some surprising findings offshore.
Samuel Briggs II, chief patrol officer for the Miami sector of the U.S. Border Patrol, described what happened in a statement.
“Hurricane Debby blew 25 bags of cocaine (70 pounds) onto a beach in the Florida Keys,” he said.[A] Good Samaritan found the drugs and contacted authorities. U.S. Border Patrol seized the drugs with a street value of over $1 million.”
Photographs of the evidence showed the bricks were wrapped in brown paper and had a red butterfly-like logo emblazoned on them.

This isn't the first time an illegal surprise has washed up on Florida beaches. In June, divers in Key West found bricks of cocaine branded with fake Nike logos on the ocean floor. In May, another beachgoer in the Keys found 65 pounds of cocaine, Miami Herald. And in 2023, about 150 pounds of cocaine Last year, about 150 pounds washed up on Big Pine Key, and in August 2023, Tampa Mayor Jane Castor caught 70 pounds of cocaine on a fishing trip with her family.
