3-year-old Brooklyn boy was killed in drowning, city medical examiner says

A 3-year-old boy in Brooklyn whose death led to murder charges against a man connected to the child’s babysitter was drowned and struck in the head, according to the city’s chief medical examiner.

Denim Brown died primarily by drowning, with blunt force injuries to his head as a contributing cause, the medical examiner’s office said on Wednesday. Brown’s death has been deemed a homicide.

Kevin James, a 29-year-old man whose family frequently babysat Brown and lived in the same building in Flatbush, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday to charges of murder, assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child. James’ attorney did not immediately return a request for comment.

Brown was found unconscious and unresponsive around 10 p.m. Sunday in the Flatbush building, police said. He was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.
