Abandoned Senior Dog Makes a Full Recovery, Finds His Forever Home

Older dogs are much harder to adopt, and for one dog in Arizona those chances appeared to be nearly gone after he was abandoned and left to die in a canal. But in a heartwarming twist of fate, Dorothea Chihuahua mix made a full recovery and found a new home with a loving family.

A newsletter from the Arizona Humane Society told Dorothea's story over the last few months. It was first found by AHS officials in June when someone called them to report that a dog was found in distress on a shopping cart in the middle of the canal.

AHS and fire officials took immediate action to save the sweet dog. They used a combination of a ladder and AHS rescue devices to carry Dorothea to safety, wagging their tails to express their excitement following the rescue. He was immediately treated by medical professionals at the AHS ambulance after they discovered he was dehydrated, hungry, covered in ticks and smelled of canal water.

“Without the rapid response of the AHS Emergency Animal Medical Technician and the Phoenix Fire Department, Dorothea would have had little to no chance of survival,” the organization said.

The sweet 10-year-old dog was found to have only minor injuries, including some broken teeth that needed to be removed. He spent several weeks at the shelter before finding his forever family in Youngtown, Arizona.

If you're looking to add a new pet to your family, consider adopting one of the millions of animals in shelters with heartbreaking stories just like Dorothea's.
