My Time At Sandrock: Beginner Tips
Here are some handy tips to help you get started in My Time at Sandrock.
But pinning down what gift every character in Sandrock likes is quite a challenge, with so many friends to make, Commissions to finish building, and so many missions to complete! Below, you’ll find a full gift guide for My Time at Sandrock.
How Does Gifting Work?
Like most slice-of-life games, you can earn additional relationship points with your favorite townsfolk in My Time at Sandrock by offering them gifts they love or like to receive.
Each character has a unique set of gifts that they’ll enjoy more than others, and their list of preferences is informed by their career, hobbies, and friendships you see them engaging in around town.
It’s important to note that not all characters have the same number of gifts they like. Certain characters can be quite picky, so you’ll need to learn personalities quickly in Sandrock.
Gifts grant affinity points with each character, and every gift will give you between one and 20 affinity points, with disliked gifts docking relationship points instead of building them. You can immediately see how many on the side of your screen.
When choosing which gifts to give to your new friends in My Time at Sandrock, you’ll be able to offer them an item from one of several categories:
- Raw resources, refined materials, and gems you’ve picked up throughout your adventures.
- Cooked meals you’ve prepared at home or purchased from one of the shops in town.
- Relics you found in the ruins and reassembled using the machine at the Museum.
- Nobody cares much for relic pieces, but completed relics tend to go over well.
- Furniture you’ve either purchased or crafted at home.
- Clothing, accessories, or jewelry, again either purchased or crafted.
- Tools or weaponry you’ve accumulated.
- Once you’ve upgraded to new weapons or tools as you become stronger, giving your old gear away is a great way to earn some easy affinity.
- Gift-specific items you can buy from By The Stairs or craft at your Workbench.
To give a gift, speak to the character you’re trying to get closer to and select the present icon on the social bar. This will open your inventory, allowing you to choose a gift you have on hand to give to your friends from a list of anything highlighted in your bag.
After you’ve given a gift to a character for the first time, if they have a strong preference for it, you can see it in their info on the Relationship tab.
Regardless of which character you’re gifting, gifts fall into six categories based on how much each character enjoys them. The six affinities are:
- Loved gifts will always be your best bet when gifting the townsfolk, as these reliably offer double-digit affinity gains, which can be compounded quite well depending on birthdays and festivals.
- Liked gifts fall just shy of the meteoric affinity gifted by loved gifts, but they’re a reliable way to gain roughly five to ten affinity points.
- “Special Neutrals” are gifts the character may not normally expect to receive, and they usually provide between two and five affinity points.
- Disliked gifts are typically similar for all characters, and they’ll lower your relationship between one and four points.
- Hated gifts are some of the worst of the worst, and giving them out lowers your relationship by five points.
- Refused gifts are offerings so heinous that the person you’re speaking to will outright refuse to take the gift, which often costs affinity points as well.
The point values you receive in-game may be higher than the numbers in this guide, depending on how you’ve spent your Social Knowledge Points.
The majority of items, however, will fall into a neutral category, which offer only one affinity point when gifted.
However, don’t give the same gift too many times in a row. The characters will still thank you for it, but they’ll call you out on giving them the same thing, and loved and liked gifts are less effective when given too many times in a row.
