Apollo Aims to Overcome Expansion Fatigue

With the Destiny franchising now ten years old, Bungie has revealed a series of changes to hit Destiny 2 as part of his new saga, currently codenamed “Frontiers”.

Game Director Tyson Green noted that annual expansions “dominated” nearly all of Bungie's development efforts. Moving on to mid-sized expansions, Destiny 2 the team is free to “explore and innovate” within the game.

These changes will begin in 2025, starting with “Codename: Apollo.” Instead of more large-scale expansions, “Apollo” will be split into two paid updates (“Arsenal” in the summer and “Surge” in the fall) and four free seasons over the course of its run.

“Codename: Behemoth” will continue this trend in winter 2025 and spring 2026, and so on.

After the layoffs in end of Julyera reported that Bungie was considering eliminating annual expansions in favor of smaller, free content drops. This new approach reflects that, and was further created to address the long-standing issues of the shared-world shooter.

In Green's words, part of this innovation will mean “challenging your idea of what a Destiny the experience can be. […] Each expansion will offer a new opportunity to try something different.”

He specifically said that non-linear campaigns, exploration experiences (a la Metroidvania), and roguelike or survival shooter formats were prototyped. Among them, the non-linear structure was explicitly confirmed for “Apollo”.

Bungie also plans to make changes to Destiny 2 User Interface AND activity AND rewardswhich have been fully detailed, individual blogs. Green acknowledged that Destiny It's become “too complex” and “rigid” and he hopes the new changes will liven up the now 10-year-old game.

“We believe that the time has come for Destiny to change and evolve, and that our community wants this game to grow and innovate as well,” he said. “And to do that, we need to start breaking some of the mold.”
