The deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew rocked the sports world. The Columbus Blue Jackets player and his brother died in a tragic accident on August 29 when they were hit by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bike just hours before their sister's wedding.
A moment of silence was held for the two brothers following their untimely deaths. The Columbus Blue Jackets, who Gaudreau joined in 2022, shared a statement mourning the passing of their teammate.
“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy,” the organization said. “Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more importantly, a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Meredith, children Noa and Johnny, his parents, family and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew.”
“Johnny played the game with a joy that was felt by everyone who saw him on the ice,” the team continued. “From Boston College to the Calgary Flames, from Team USA to the Blue Jackets, he brought a genuine love for hockey wherever he played. He excited fans the way only Johnny Hockey could. His impact on our organization and our sport was profound, but it pales in comparison to the indelible impression he left on all who knew him.”
“Johnny embraced our community when he arrived two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms,” the statement concluded. “We will miss him greatly and will do everything we can to support his family and each other during this tragedy.”
