Back to the Future Director Robert Zemeckis has always been adamant against any future sequels or remakes of his beloved sci-fi comedy trilogy. However, in a recent podcast, he revealed the only way to bring the film to life on the big screen.
Zemeckis was speaking with Josh Horowitz on the last episode of his show. Happy Sad Confused podcast, with the host stating that Zemeckis and Bob Gale, who co-wrote the films, have been “fiercely protective” of the franchise over the years; except for the musical adaptation.
“We always felt that this was enough and that we had to live with three films and that the musical was more of a companion to the films than a remake,” the 72-year-old actor explained. “This is something completely different, and it's really just a celebration of the film.”
Horowitz then asked Zemeckis if Universal Pictures was bugging them about another sequel every few years, given the money left on the table by not continuing the films.
“Oh, every six months,” Zemeckis joked, then laughed and explained that he was exaggerating a bit. “Isn't there something we can do here? Isn't there something we can do?” He said he was impersonating studio executives. “And you know we have to say: 'There are different things that might work.' Something like this but remaking the movie or suggesting something exists? Back to the Future 4It's just not in the cards.”
Later in the interview, Horowitz asked Zemeckis if there was a genre he still wanted to tackle. “I would like to do Back to the Future: Musica“I,” he said, “just like [Mel Brooks] I did it with Producers. I would love to do this. I think that would be great.”
Unfortunately, Zemeckis also admitted that his attempts to turn things around have so far been unsuccessful. “I've brought this up to the people at Universal, and they don't understand. So there's nothing I can do,” he added, to which Horowitz stated: “Okay, we're going to put this out into the universe and try to do that.” make it happen for you.”
Never say Never.
