Baldur’s Gate 3 Players Still Losing Save Files On Xbox, Fix Coming Soon

PSA: Yesterday’s Baldur’s Gate 3 update doesn’t fix the bug that’s deleting save files on Xbox. Instead, Larian says that it is working with Microsoft to bring out another update that should address this, so in the meantime, your save files are not safe.

Some players who thought that the recent update would fix the issue have been left disappointed, reporting further save erasures since trying to start their campaigns again. In the meantime, Xbox has offered suggestions on how players can keep their saved progress safe, and it involves keeping your Xbox powered at all times, even when it’s switched off.

Baldur’s Gate 3 On Xbox Is The Perfect Chance To Start All Over Again

A fresh start, a new character, new choices: take Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox port is the perfect chance to start that second playthrough

“Just to update you on the Xbox saves issue, we’re working with Microsoft on a second fix that should hopefully solve it,” says Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian. “It’s looking optimistic. Not as simple as just patching the game itself, so kudos to the green team for being so on top.”

Douse also shared an article from Xbox, detailing how players can take steps to protect the saves they already have if they haven’t been affected by the issue yet. These fixes are:

  • Keep your Xbox powered at the wall, although switching it off is still fine.
  • Make sure your Xbox is on the latest system update.
  • Close the game when you’re done playing, instead of using quick resume.

Over on Reddit, some say that the save issue is still present, and recommend avoiding the game until Larian and Xbox confirm that it’s been fixed. Others also say that the latest Baldur’s Gate 3 update has harmed the performance of the game, although this isn’t as much of a widespread complaint as the issue with save data.

Hopefully, once Microsoft rolls out whatever fix it needs to, Xbox players won’t have their progress interrupted – or even erased entirely – any more. They’ve waited long enough to start their own campaigns, with the Xbox port coming months after the initial releases on PC and PlayStation 5. The game has cross-save functionality, if you’re one of those people who likes to pick up a game on multiple platforms, but given the ongoing issues with Xbox, you might want to steer clear of that feature for the time being.
