Best Multiclass Options For Druids In Baldur’s Gate 3

Druids are a fun, versatile support class in Baldur’s Gate 3. Their spells are uniquely varied, and are powerful in both combat and story. Most importantly, though, you can turn into a bear. Because Druids unlock their ability to wild shape and get a subclass at level two, they also benefit greatly from multiclassing.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Complete Guide To Druids

We look at how druids function, their unique spells and abilities, and what players they’ll suit in Baldur’s Gate 3.

The most important things to consider when multiclassing Druids are their hit points, combat potential, and spell casting stat. Since Druids cast with Wisdom, multiclassing into a spell casting class that doesn’t cast from Wisdom could be difficult. Druids are also relatively squishy and can’t take too many big hits in combat, so they could benefit from multiclassing with something more durable.

Barbarian

If you’re looking for a tankier build, multiclassing as a barbarian is the way to go. Since Barbarians are so good at taking hits, this multiclass combo can increase your druid’s health and allow them to fight on the front lines. This can be especially useful if you want to keep enemies from hitting other squishier party members (looking at you, Gale).

The strongest part of this class combination is being able to Rage while in Wild Shape, which grants you resistance to all physical damage and increases your attack damage.

Since you have a limited action pool when in beast form, you’ll need to Rage before you Wild Shape. However, as long as you attack an enemy or take damage every turn, you will maintain your Rage in Wild Shape.

Circle of the Moon is the best subclass for a druid looking to focus on dealing damage in beast form. They are the only druid subclass that gains the Bear form, which they unlock at level two when you select that subclass.

While spell casting may not be your focus with a barbarian build, barbarians are proficient in Constitution saving throws, which will make you more likely to succeed on concentration saving throws. However, keep in mind that you can’t cast or concentrate on a spell while Raging.

If you’re looking to increase damage dealt while in Wild Shape, druid levels are important. Not to mention, at level five, druids get the feature Wild Strike, which grants an extra attack in Wild Shape.

Subclass Choice: Wildheart

Connected with the beasts of nature, wildheart Barbarians are on theme for a druid multiclass. The Bestial Hearts you can choose between as a wildheart make a very versatile subclass with lots of customization opportunities.

Keep in mind that while using Wild Shape, you won’t have access to the actions granted by your Bestial Heart rage. If you plan to do a lot of attacking in beast form, you might want to consider the passives granted by each Bestial Heart more than the actions.

At level five, barbarians gain an extra attack, which is useful for a multiclass focused on damage-dealing. At level six, wildhearts get to choose an Animal Aspect, which once again offers a wide range of passives to customize your build to your liking.

Cleric

Baldur's Gate 3 Shadowheart in the Blighted Village

Multiclassing as a cleric makes sense for druids because they share Wisdom as a spell-casting stat. Not to mention, the cleric class can be one of the strongest in Baldur’s Gate 3.

If you’re going for a spell-casting focus, circle of the land makes the most sense as a druid subclass.

Keep in mind that multiclassing can add difficulty for a spell caster since you’ll limit access to higher-level spells.

For both druids and clerics, fifth-level spells become available at level nine, and sixth-level spells become available at level 11.

This leaves your levels in cleric minimized to either one if you want sixth-level spells, or three if you’re willing to settle for one fifth-level spell slot. However, Clerics can gain some pretty great spells and abilities even at level one.

Even outside their subclass, all level one clerics get some great spell options. You could choose to prepare more healing spells, or spells such as Sanctuary and Shield of Faith that can turn the tide of battle in a pinch.

If you decide to reach cleric level three, Aid and Prayer of Healing can further expand your healing abilities. Spiritual Weapon and Silence are other great options since both can increase your control over a fight.

Cleric Subclass

While it might seem like a relevant choice, we don’t recommend a Nature Domain cleric multiclass, as there is a lot of overlap between the offered spells for each class.

Instead, both Light Domain and Tempest Domain make for great options with a multiclass focused on spell casting.

Remember that your Domain spells are always prepared.

Both subclasses can expand your available repertoire of spells without too much overlap, and even if limited to level one, both offer spells that deal good damage and give an advantage on the battlefield, such as Faerie Fire and Fog Cloud, for the Light and Tempest Domains respectively.

Ranger

The ranger class goes hand in hand with druids as another nature-focused class that deals with powerful beasts. Rangers aren’t the strongest spell casters, but they have a few features that could enhance your druid by bringing more summons to a fight.

Summons give you more opportunities to deal damage to enemies and keep enemies occupied fighting them, as opposed to your main team. The Beast Tamer archetype, offered at level one, allows you to cast Find Familiar as a ritual spell, saving you a spell slot, too.

Ensnaring Strike and Hunter’s Mark are two other ranger spells that are good to have on hand since both give you a boost to damage at the cost of a level one spell slot.

Beast Master

At ranger level three, you can select a subclass. Beast Master allows you to summon an animal companion. This combination could allow you to keep two heavy-hitting animals on the field at the same time—one being your Ranger Companion, and the other being you in beast form.

This strategy would allow both you (in beast form) and your companion to draw attacks and deal damage to enemies, taking some heat off your human companions.

Since leveling as a ranger makes your companion stronger, you might want to invest some levels here. It’s a good idea to get to level five as a druid, to get an additional attack while in Wild Shape from Wild Strike, so you could prioritize that first.

At ranger level five, you’ll gain another extra attack, and as Beast Master, your companion will gain upgraded armor class, hit points, and damage. If you want to dedicate the rest of your levels to your ranger class, at level seven, your companion gains the Dash, Disengage, and Help bonus actions.
