Brad Pitt's Formula 1 Movie Had to Invent a New Camera

The cinematographer of Brad Pitt's Formula 1 movie has now spoken: Diversity It's about inventing a new camera to capture the film's breathtaking racing footage.

Two-time Academy Award winner Claudio Miranda (The Strange Case of Benjamin Button, Life of Pi) announced that he is working with Sony Electronics and F1 Director Joseph Kosinski is working to develop a new, extremely small camera that would allow Pitt and his co-star Damson Idris to do their own driving for the film. Miranda has been working on each of Kosinski's features, especially Best Weapon: MaverickOn this film, the two men also used Sony's pioneering camera technology to capture the confined cockpit scenes, which required much smaller cameras that could be easily mounted on any surface.

But except for Tom Cruise, Independent's community “did not fly a plane[s],” Miranda remarked. “On Formula 1 [sic]the actors were driving the cars… So we needed a camera system that was small enough that we could be sure. [Pitt] “We can drive and see around while getting the shots we want.”

The cameras were built into the Mercedes Benzes used in the filming, with four units placed in each vehicle to capture a variety of angles. “We spent a lot of time preparing the cars,” Miranda said, explaining that in some tests, drivers went as fast as 200 MPH. “Sony really listens to us.”

It was especially important that the cameras worked properly before shooting, because F1 was given unprecedented access to the actual Formula One track. Kosinski and Miranda shot on actual race days, using actual participants as backdrops for the film, but Pitt and Idris very much appeared on their own. “Both Brad and Damson are really good drivers,” Miranda said, adding that the driving scenes seen in the trailer were “early Brad.” “He’s actually a lot faster now.”

It's unclear whether Sony plans to offer the newly invented camera to commercial consumers. F1 is currently wrapping up its final few months of filming, with scenes set in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi yet to be filmed. It will be in theaters on June 27, 2025.
