Bulova's Newest Watch Is a Stunning Racing Chronograph That's Surprisingly Affordable

Next year Bulova celebrates its 150th anniversary in watchmaking, and throughout this history the brand has produced purposeful watches that are stylish and ostentatious. So it's little surprise that the marque ventured into motorsport during the rise of both in the 1940s. In 1957, Bulova became NASCAR's official timekeeper and branched out in the 1970s, sponsoring the Formula Ford series from 1972 to 1976.

Just over a decade later the watchmaker became the sponsor of the Benetton Formula 1 racing team, which won the 1989 season with Bulova embossed on the front wings of the B189s driven by Alessandro Nannini and Johnny Herbert.

Will Bulova return to motorsport? We certainly hope so, but in the meantime, the brand is honoring its 20th-century heritage in racing with a new and incredibly affordable Racer Chronograph in three variants.

In accordance with the name of the watch, there is a 60-minute chronograph function on the subdial at 9 o'clock, a black and orange tachymeter scale and an aluminum part on the bezel. The second subdial at 3 o'clock counts the time in 24 hours, and there is a date display at 6 o'clock. Available in light blue or black, the dial features applied silver-tone markers and beveled hands, all coated with a super-luminous material for readability in low-light conditions.

Available in both stainless steel and black stainless, the lines of the case are intended to evoke the aerodynamically shaped panels of a mid-century speed demon. Inside the metal, the watch is powered by a 0S21 quartz movement that provides accuracy of up to 15 seconds per month.

An option of the new Bulova Racer watch is the blue dial on the stainless steel bracelet.

Customers can choose the Racer with a blue dial on a steel bracelet or the black steel piece with a discreet, black dial on a black racing leather strap. But for the classic motorsport style and (current) sub-$500 price point, we'd prefer the silver-toned stainless case over brown leather with a black dial.

Starting from $476
