California Gin Selected as the World's Best Flavored Gin

Gin may originate from Europe, but in 2024 some of the world's best gin doesn't even come from the continent.

Spirits experts evaluated more than 7,000 different liquors at this year's International Wine and Spirits Competition to determine some of the best in each category for spirits enthusiasts around the world. After the various gold and silver medal winners were selected, testers returned to select just 24 of the best spirits to award the coveted IWSC awards.

Turns out you don't have to look outside the 50 states to find the world's best flavored gin. California-based Junipero Gin, the distillery behind the US's first craft gin, won the crown of best flavored gin on the planet this year, taking top honors for their Smoked Rosemary gin.

Junipero's Smoked Rosemary gin has an “inviting nose with rosemary at the forefront,” according to experts. “Dry resinous notes and well-managed smoke add depth,” they said, creating a palate filled with “hints of smoked rosemary, juniper and fresh lemon,” complemented by a “nice, clean, balanced finish.” Also don't expect to spend money to get your hands on a bottle; it's currently on sale for $35 on Junipero's website.

By the way, the world's best gins have not gone to any European liquor either. Instead, the award went to Australia's Naught Distilling Overproof Gin, described by the IWSC jury as having “seductive aromas of vanilla and pepper” and a “smooth and integrated taste full of berry fruit”.

Level up your next gin and tonic for a great night out.
