Critical Role's horror-investigation RPG Candela Obscura will be performed live on stage for the first time in Los Angeles

It’s the season of live-action show announcements, and Critical Role’s creepy sister Candela Obscura has just joined the action. Management company Darrington Press revealed that the horror-investigation role-playing game will take to the stage at The United Theater on Broadway in Los Angeles on May 25 with plenty of familiar faces sitting around the table.

Designer Spenser Starke (currently developing the highly anticipated fantasy role-playing game Daggerheart) will serve as game master for a new coterie comprised of Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, Marisha Ray, and acclaimed guest star Khary Payton. Taliesin Jaffe will serve as master of ceremonies, reprising a role he played in two of Candela Obscura’s previous seasons.

Candela Obscura is one of the first tabletop roleplaying games designed in-house by Darrington Press for both public play and short anthology seasons featuring regular Critical Role cast members and many guests. The characters play investigators committed to a strange mystical order known as the Circle, and work to solve arcane mysteries and unrest in the world of 1920s Faerie (if mysticism were real).

VIP ticket holders will join the show early for a 75-minute session where they can watch live as the cast creates their characters and sketches out the Circle that will play out in the show’s Candela Obscura one-shot. Regular tickets will get you into the event starting at 4:45 p.m. Pacific Time. Anyone who can’t fly to Los Angeles will be able to watch a livestream on Critical Role’s YouTube and Twitch channels starting May 30 at 7 p.m. Pacific Time. A recording will be posted to VoD on June 3.

Critical Role's success has cemented itself in the tabletop gaming world, with the Candela Obscura offshoot announcing its fourth season in February. Along with Daggerheart, which is all but assured to spur a future show (perhaps even CR's next main series), Darrington Press has established a small empire within the hobby.

That hasn’t stopped Dimension 20 from stealing the show by announcing a live show at Madison Square Garden in January 2025, which almost immediately sold out one of New York City’s most prestigious venues. Brennan Lee Mulligan and his team are currently on tour in the UK, making them a worthy contender in that slot.
