This is not an easy film. Again, very brave. I don't know if you are familiar with the book or not. This is a short novel published only in 1985, right after the death of William Burroughs. It's a very autobiographical novel when Burroughs is a drug addict and gay and has to leave Texas. He went to Mexico City and started hanging out in bars and restaurants looking for company. The movie is fantastic. I think this is the best movie Luca Guadagnino has ever made and Danny Craig's performance is absolutely superb. I think this is the performance of his life. He's a great, great actor and of course he's taking some risks because it's something that hasn't been consistent with his previous films.
There were three versions of the film. The first one took more than three hours. The second was two and a half. The final version is two hours and 15 minutes long. I haven't seen the last one, but the two versions I've seen have been really, really amazing. Luca recreated Mexico City at Cinecitta in Rome, so the visual is completely abstract, not real. It's still very personal, very original, visually beautiful. And all the performances are perfect.
More to come…
