A Delta Airlines plane reportedly carrying Carolina Panthers NFL players made a scary landing early Friday morning when it skidded off a taxiway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Thankfully, no one was injured in the crash.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening as the team was returning home from Providence, RI, following a preseason game against the New England Patriots. WCNC-TV NewsDelta Flight 8860 was carrying 188 passengers when it landed around 2:35 a.m. and veered off the taxiway closest to the nearby Billy Graham Parkway and got stuck in the mud.
The passengers were safely evacuated from the plane shortly after landing and taken to Wilson Air Center; no injuries were reported. Witnesses reported seeing an unknown number of Carolina Panthers teammates on the plane.
“The right main gear of Delta 8860 came off the taxiway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after a normal arrival,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement after the incident. “There were no reports of injuries to the 188 customers who deplaned and were bused to the terminal. We apologize to our customers for this inconvenience.”
Insult after insult, the Panthers were crushed 17-3 by the Patriots at Gillette Stadium, even though the team was playing its first game under coach Bill Belichick in 24 years. It was the Patriots’ first game without Belichick since Jan. 2, 2000, when Belichick led the team to six Super Bowl titles alongside Tom Brady in the franchise’s dynasty from 2001 to 2019.
