A new Disney Lorcana mechanic called Sing Together will let players work together to play powerful songs in the collectible card game's upcoming Ursula's Return expansion.
Sing Together, revealed by TheGamer, works very similarly to the singing mechanic that’s been present in Lorcana since launch, but with a crucial twist: a player’s teammates can drain their own characters to help pay the high cost of these six massive cards. In an expansion heavily influenced by The Little Mermaid, along with the introduction of the Madrigal family of Encanto, big co-op songs make a lot of sense.
Sing Together is also the first mechanic explicitly tied to co-op play. Ursula's return will be accompanied by a new player-versus-environment game mode, Illumineer's Quests, and its first installment, Deep Trouble, sees two players taking on Ursula via a boss deck that can be modified for different difficulties. Sing Together cards sound like the perfect tool to bring the sea witch under control.
Each Ink color will have its own entry that plays directly into their respective strengths. Amber’s Look At This draws two characters from the top five cards of your deck, while Amethyst’s Second Star to the Right steals a whopping five cards to your hand. Emerald’s Under The Sea buries all opposing creatures with power 2 or less to the bottom of their players’ decks, and Ruby’s A Pirate’s Life drains two Lore from each opponent while granting you two Lore of your own. Sapphire’s Dig A Little Deeper does exactly that—drawing two cards from the top seven of your deck into your hand—and Steel’s The Mob Song deals three damage to up to three characters and locations.
These Sing Together cards start at eight knowledge levels and go all the way up to ten, and none of them are off the table—publisher Ravensburger hopes they’ll be game-changing bombs. It’s not yet clear whether there will be more Song cards in Ursula’s Return, but this is a nice first taste of Lorcana’s take on Magic: The Gathering’s Summon mechanic, just with more music.
If you missed last week's news, the rest of the Madrigal family from Disney's Encanto will be joining the fight in Ursula's Return. Half of the magical Colombian crew was revealed back in March, and it seemed very likely that we wouldn't have to settle for an incomplete set. Polygon revealed the final four members of the family along with their beloved home.
Casa Madrigal, Casita is a location with six defenses that costs one Ink to place a character in. Once they’ve turned that house into a home, it will produce a story at the start of your turn. That’s a powerful passive generator that frees you up to control the board with various aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Speaking of which, Bruno has returned in an appropriately named Bruno's Return action card that brings back a character from the discard pile while healing two damage from another. Pepa's capricious weather control allows her to exhaust an opposing character when it comes into play and keep them locked into the next turn. Isabella Madrigal is a Lore-generating powerhouse as long as no other characters join her quest, and Calimo is a modular threat who, at the start of his turn, chooses between gaining one additional Lore or Challenger +2.
Ursula's Return will hit hobby shops on May 17 and then launch at retail stores on May 31. If you want to read more about the upcoming changes to the game, Dicebreaker has you covered.
