It’s Friday morning in New York City where NYC Health + Hospitals approved a $325 million contract for security expenses at migrant shelters around the city, and local taxpayers are footing the bill.

Here’s what else is happening:

  • Netflix is adding Grand Theft Auto to its line-up of games available to subscribers free of charge as the company seeks to expand its slow-moving video game business.
  • The giant snowflake that hangs at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, and is made up of 16,500 crystal light fixtures, recently got a refresh.
  • Hundreds of detainees at New York state prisons were unfairly punished for contraband after a faulty drug test gave false positives.
  • As more activities become dog-friendly — eating out, weddings, even going to the movie theater — it may be important to ask yourself whether your dog would even want to go to these places.
  • A three-year cruise around the world that would cost $29,000 a year, or about $2,499 (less than most people’s rent), was supposed to set sail yesterday, but was canceled because there’s no ship.
  • New Jersey casino workers were furious after a bill that would end smoking in Atlantic City casinos was delayed yet again after Democratic lawmakers said they would not have enough votes to advance it.
