In the new documentary Elton John: It's Never Too LatePremiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, the 77-year-old music icon opens up with heartbreaking honesty about her fears and regrets as an elderly parent.
John shares sons Zachary, 13, and Elijah, 11, with her husband of 10 years, David Furnish, 61. “They think about my mortality. They worry about my mortality,” John said of his sons. “Not so much David, but me.”
The “I'm Still Standing” singer added that his sons “love their dad so much, so they want me to be around forever.” “I would love to be around forever,” John admitted.
Still, John understands the realities of aging. He has accepted that Zachary and Elijah will probably not be around for most of their major life events. “I want them to have kids and get married. I don't think I'll be around for that. Who knows?” John thought. “You never know.”
Despite the pain, John is determined to enjoy every moment he can spend with his family. “I want to make the most of my time, while I’m around,” he said. “That time together is so wonderful and so precious.”
John's words were first heard at the documentary's premiere, just a day after the singer revealed he spent the summer “dealing with a serious eye infection that unfortunately left me with limited vision in one eye.” He added to his fans: “I'm getting better, but it's an incredibly slow process.”
