Screen Rant had a chance to sit down DC vs. Vampires: World War V writer Matthew Rosenberg on what's next for the famous and bloody Elseworlds. Finally, a new Batman theme has come up, a plot point that was recently revealed in a solicitation for the third issue of the series.
Matthew Rosenberg: …And I think the DC Universe naturally wants Batman. It is as important to us as air and sunlight to the universe. Nature abhors a vacuum, and in the absence of Batman, the DC Universe will create one and we'll get Bruce back? Is there a new Batman? We will explain what it is. I think people will be shocked, some will say they saw this coming, most are liars. Some will see this happening, but I think it makes sense. We wouldn't do it if it didn't make sense. And we wouldn't do it if it didn't serve the story.
Roseberg says that nature “hates emptiness” and a new Dark Knight will emerge to fill the void. He cryptically teases that few people will be able to guess the identity of the new Batmanalthough he promises this new hero”it makes sense” and will ultimately serve the story.
A new Batman is coming DC vs. Vampires: World War V
Of all the Elseworlds in the DC Comics canon, few are as violent or tragic as DC-Vampires. In this world, a wave of vampirism has spread among superhuman society, with heroes and villains alike turning into undead monsters serving at the behest of the Vampire King. The heroes followed a path to destroy the Joker, considered the Vampire King, only for Nightwing to emerge as the true leader. To make his betrayal even more devastating, Nightwing revealed his true colors literally ripping Batman's heart out of his chest.
Rosenberg is playing it coy, and while he claims some might understand, he still isn't giving up who the new Dark Knight is. Could Bruce be the new Batman? It was very difficult because he died violently. While fans can speculate all day about the new hero's true identity, Rosenberg's thoughts on the DCU's need for Batman are more interesting. The idea that Batman is a concept that may outlive Bruce It's a fascinating idea. Things went to hell when Batman died, so maybe this new one can finally restore order.
Batman is vital to restoring Order to the DC Universe
Just as Superman is a symbol of hope, Batman is a symbol of order. Whether the DC Universe is actively bracing for the new Caped Crusader's presence, or whether someone out there thinks Batman's image will do the world some good, the tide is finally turning in these monstrous Otherworlds. Bruce's days on Earth may be over, but someone else sees the value in his personality and uses him to restore stability to the DC Universe. Hopefully whoever it is Batman they give the world the order it so desperately needs.
