Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Might Have Taken Away Cid’s Cigarettes

The Game Awards gave us a bunch of exciting new reveals earlier this week, but it also gave us closer looks at some of the titles coming out within the next few months. One of these titles was Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which got a new trailer giving us our first proper look at characters such as Cait Sith, Vincent Valentine, and everyone’s favorite potty-mouthed, chainsmoking, super pilot Cid Highwind.

Cid pretty much always had a cigarette in his mouth during Final Fantasy 7, adding to that gruff exterior that we all love. However, fans have noticed that Cid’s appearances in the latest trailer – as well as every single bit of concept art and his character profile – don’t feature a single cigarette.

First spotted by Twitter user TheStrifeisRife, it appears as though Cid no longer has a packet of cigarettes in his goggle strap like in his original Final Fantasy 7 design, and there isn’t a cigarette in sight in the two instances we see him in the new trailer. Granted, one of them is when he’s piloting a place, but the other is a fairly mundane conversation with Aerith on a landing strip.

Honestly, I would be glad if they got rid of it. Smoking is not a personality trait. He has more going on than that little detail.

To be fair, Cid was always going to get toned down in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. He’s pretty foul in his best moments, with every other word coming out of his mouth being a horrible swear, though getting rid of his cigarettes is one of the more surprising changes.

He could also just have his cigarettes in his pocket now instead of strapping them around his noggin, choosing to conserve them a bit more instead of having one in his mouth 99 percent of the time.We won’t know for sure if Cid has a few nicotine patches on his arm until we see him for ourselves when the game launches.

What we do know is that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth appears to be bringing characters back from the dead, as there are a couple of shots in the new trailer in which Jessie features as a dancer at the Golden Saucer. How she fits into the story and how she escaped from the Sector 7 plate drop remains to be seen, though fans are convinced we have an alternate timeline situation going on, which would immediately explain the existence of both Zack and Jessie.
