Flooding Destroys Region: Europe's Largest Airport Under Water

As of Monday afternoon, Barcelona is under an “extreme danger” red alert warning as heavy rainstorms flooded the city, flooding the airport and causing chaos on the roads. The announcement comes just six days after intense flooding in Valencia claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

The regional government of Catalonia has issued an urgent warning to citizens to avoid travel and stay away from rivers, waterways and storm drains. Cars could be seen being swept away by floodwater in images heartbreakingly similar to those in Valencia last week.

On Monday, dozens of flights departing from Barcelona's El Prat Airport were severely delayed or canceled outright as the runway and surrounding areas were flooded, even reaching the terminal with passengers having to wade through ankle-deep mud.

A shocking clip showed the entrance to the airport being almost completely submerged under water.

In Catalonia, highways were closed due to flooding and all regional train services were temporarily suspended. The country's meteorological agency, Aemet, issued a red warning meaning “extreme danger” along Barcelona's coastline, warning that total rainfall would reach 180 liters (47 gallons) per square meter within 12 hours.

The rain is expected to last until 14.00 local time. Authorities do not expect the flooding and destruction to be as severe as what Valencia experienced last week.
