Former McDonald's Chef Reveals Why All-Day Breakfast is Really Gone

McDonald's first introduced all-day breakfast service in 2016, delighting fans who have been clamoring for years to order an Egg McMuffin after 10:30 a.m. But it didn't last long, and after it was temporarily suspended in March 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, franchise owners voted to permanently remove all-day breakfast later that year to ensure “better service speed and order accuracy”.

However, there's another reason for fryer capacity, which former McDonald's corporate chief Mike Haracz explained in a recent video on his popular TikTok account.

Haracz was responding to a commenter who asked why the chain couldn't cook fries and fries at the same time when he brought up the big picture. “They tried doing all-day breakfast, but then they realized they needed training and a lot of staff in the restaurant to do it successfully – it was very difficult – it needed a lot of people,” he explained.

But he said the problem with fries and hash browns specifically is that both items are fried in the same fryer and have different temperatures for the oil.

Haracz continued: “It's not too drastic, you can do one or the other, but they wouldn't be the gold standard of McDonald's.” “The other fact is that heat lamps are the same heat lamps, so generally the amount of potatoes and the volume of fries that cover it, the less real estate you have because you have to put fries in there as well.”

He also noted that french fries are generally a little easier to handle because they are placed in a large basket and thrown in, while french fries need to be cooked separately.

Haracz added: “The fact that McDonald's doesn't want to give you what you want, it wants to make things as easy as possible operationally,” knowing that people will still go there and order whatever they have. If that's not what they want.

“That's why it's so hard for them to understand,” he concluded.
