Launched in 1983, the G-Shock was built on toughness, the ability to withstand the world’s harshest conditions, and a whole host of great features. But it wasn’t until the 1990s that the iconic brand began designing watches that combined that toughness (and utility) with elevated style for its increasingly discerning fans. G-Shock’s flagship MR-G series (which stands for “majesty and reality”), which hit shelves in 1996, has been a game-changer for the brand ever since.

Casio has introduced its latest MR-G offering, the MR-G G-Shock Frogman MRG-BF1000B1A. Constructed entirely from metal, this watch represents a radical departure from the resin models the brand has long been known for. The latest iteration combines the MR-G standard with another of the Japanese watchmaker’s most well-known high-end timepiece series, the Frogman.

First introduced in 1993, the Frogman is a series of divers’ watches made from durable materials that provide high resistance to water and pressure. The MRGBF1000 is water-resistant to 200 meters. Original parts were made of resin, but this MR-G divers’ watch takes the asymmetrical design and diving frog character to new heights with a titanium remake.
The overall construction of this MR-G-meets-Frogman watch is one of the brand’s most complex to date. It’s a perfect match for G-Shock fans who are drawn to serious water adventures. The watch is constructed with the assembly of over 70 external components, including O-ring waterproof seals and bumpers to reinforce the shock-resistant structure. For added strength, a protective structure with fluoro rubber bumpers is placed between the watch’s various bezel components. The screw-down case back is fitted with a sapphire crystal finished with red vapor deposition and is engraved with the series’ diving frog character.
The watch’s extendable titanium band is perfect for divers, as it can be worn over a wetsuit. It also features Bluetooth and a dedicated app to pair with your smartphone, displaying tide data for over 3,000 locations worldwide. In dive mode, the hour and minute hands overlap and work in harmony to create a single, easy-to-read hand.
At $5,800, the MR-G/FROGMAN MRGBF1000B1A sits at the expensive end of the G-Shock spectrum, but its standout features and striking design improvements mean the world’s most durable watch brand can back it up.
