Dame Maggie Smith's co-stars are honoring the late star following the announcement of her death at the age of 89 on Friday morning.
Smith's Harry Potter leading man Daniel Radcliffe was one of the first to pay tribute to the legendary star of stage and screen. “Truly heartbreaking, she was one of the most talented women who ever lived,” Radcliffe wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He left a wonderful legacy and will always be remembered.”
Before Harry PotterSmith and Radcliffe worked together on a television adaptation. David Copperfield Radcliffe played the title character as a child. Smith, who played the governess in the miniseries, was so impressed by Radcliffe's performance and work ethic that she lobbied hard for him to take on the role of Harry Potter. Clearly their efforts were successful.

Rob Lowe, who starred with Smith in 1993 Suddenly, Last Summeralso included a homage to the icon in X. “I'm sorry to hear that Dame Maggie Smith has passed away. I had an unforgettable experience working with her; sharing two takes was like being mated with a lion,” he wrote. I could eat anyone alive and often did. But it's funny and it's a great friendship. We'll never see you again, Miss Smith!”

Hugh Bonneville, who starred with Smith Downton Abbeysaid BBC“Anyone who has shared the stage with Maggie will testify to her sharp eyes, sharp intelligence and incredible talent. He was a true legend of his generation and will thankfully live on through many wonderful screen performances. “I offer my condolences to his sons and the wider family.”
Same kind of Downton Abbey actor Lesley Nicol said the entire cast was devastated after hearing of Smith's passing. “This is a very close group of people, so we were all devastated to think he wasn't around anymore,” Nichol said.
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes told Diversity He said Smith was “a truly wonderful actor and we were so lucky to be involved in the final act of his amazing career.”
Whoopi Goldberg starring Smith Sister Act The franchise also released a heartfelt statement on Instagram. “Maggie Smith was a great woman and a great actress. I still can't believe I was lucky enough to work with 'one of a kind'. My sincerest condolences to his family… RIP.”
Unfortunately, Smith's death came shortly after Goldberg made a public call for him to return next season. Sister Act 3. “I told Maggie Smith, I want her to know that I'm holding the role of Mother Superior for you, because I can't do this with anyone else but you,” Goldberg said in January 2023. “If you need me to come [to England] We'll hit and do what we need to do, whatever you want us to do. Because we don't want to do this without you, Maggie.”
