How a 12-Year-Old Boy Saved His Father from a Bear Attack

A father and his son in Wisconsin had a pretty terrifying experience near their cabin when a bear mauled the father. After the bear mauled him, his son had to take action.

Twelve-year-old Owen Beierman described the terrifying experience: SQUAREWhile he and his father, Ryan, were hunting earlier this month, Owen spotted a black bear and shot it from a distance. After the bear fled into the woods, the two chased it down and tried to pick up the scent by following a blood trail and using a neighbor's dog.

They eventually came face to face with the 200-pound bear, and the bear father began to tear Ryan to pieces.

“I had a gun in my hand and I was trying to get him to leave by hitting him in the head,” said the 43-year-old. “I looked down and all I saw was teeth and claws coming at my face and I remember hearing the first bite.”

“I suddenly fell on my back,” he said. CBS News “I started hitting him with the gun and it felt like I was hitting a brick wall. I tried to hit him between the ear and the mouth with the blunt end of the gun.”

“I was punching and kicking and struggling. That's when I saw a flash coming from the barrel of Owen's rifle,” he added.

Owen took action and shot the bear as it mauled his father. The 12-year-old admitted he was thinking fast.

“I saw [the bear] “I dropped him on the ground and just saw the black line and shot over the dog's back and hit the bear,” Owen said. SQUARE“I just thought, 'Shoot the bear and save my dad.' That's all I really remember.”

Ryan required 23 stitches for a gash on his cheek that left the skin hanging loose, seven puncture wounds and a cut on his right arm.

“Owen was a hero,” the proud father said. “He shot the bear and killed it on me.”
