As the head of a Rogue Trader dynasty, however, the Lord Captain is afforded much more leeway in how they choose to interpret Imperial morality.

Your character’s alignment follows three paths; Iconoclast, Dogmatic, and Heretical. Each will change how others see the Lord Captain, and can have an effect on what gear you can equip and what story outcomes you experience.
How To Choose An Alignment
You can check each character’s convictions in the Biography Tab of their character sheet. Most companions will stick to a single track, while the Lord Captain is likely to level up along two at once or even all three.
Whenever a dialogue option or major decision would cause one of your convictions to grow, it will be clearly noted in brackets next to the decision. Some options will only appear if their related conviction is of a high enough level, so choosing a morality path tends to have a snowball effect; heresy begets heresy, after all.
If a piece of equipment has an alignment requirement, it will be noted at the top of the item’s info box.
When you’ve built up enough points in a single conviction, it will unlock the next level in the Biography Tab. Alignment requirements are measured by individual conviction levels, rather than by the score that feeds them, so it will usually take several missions’ worth of decisions to level up a conviction.
Iconoclast
Do The Right Thing
Iconoclasts are the heroes of the Imperium. Caring for the common folk and keeping them safe isn’t expected of a Rogue Trader, so choosing to do so is sure to make the Lord Captain’s deeds stand out.
An Iconoclast will:
- Protect the innocent.
- Show leniency to their subordinates.
- Save human lives, even at their own peril.
- Never leave a soldier behind.
Dogmatic
Do As The Emperor Wills
A Dogmatic character adheres to Imperial law, out of patriotism, faith, or simple pragmatism. They know that the forces of Chaos are always looking for an opening, and will make harsh decisions for the good of the galaxy.
A Dogmatist will:
- Distrust anything out of the ordinary.
- Shoot first and ask questions never.
- Strictly punish insubordination and incompetence.
- Destroy heretical or alien artifacts immediately.

Heretical
Do Whatever It Takes
A Heretical character skirts or breaks Imperial law. This doesn’t necessarily mean that they consort with aliens or openly worship the Chaos Gods, but if they weren’t under the protection of a Warrant of Trade they’d likely be unwelcome in most respectable circles.
A Heretic will:
- Undermine Imperial authorities.
- Openly question established protocols.
- Use Warp-sorcery or alien technology.
- Willingly work with criminals, aliens, and cultists.
