There is an ancient process that explains why all the lightsabers of the Sith Lords are red Star Wars galaxy. While Jedi Knights have several different lightsaber colors, with blue and green being the most common crystals, Sith crystals are all red. There's a very obscure reason for this, it's been developed in many mediums other than the canon movies and shows.
Starting with Charles Soule Darth Vader In the 2017 comic series, the origin of the red kyber crystals was confirmed as not being found naturally in the galaxy compared to those used by the Jedi Order. Instead, the red kyber crystal must be forged using an incredibly dark tradition. How Sith Lords turn lightsaber crystals red Star Wars continuity.
Sith 'Tells' Red Kyber Crystal Using His Emotions
This is a difficult and dangerous process
Instead of being found naturally on worlds like Illum or Kristofsis, red kyber must be crafted by the Sith. After acquiring natural kyber (regardless of color), the Sith Lord corrupts the crystal using the dark side of the Force in a process known as “bleeding”. Kyber is considered alive because of his inner connection to the Force, and the Sith Lord pours all their hatred and pain into the crystal. This causes him to literally bleed out, creating a sinister crimson color as kyber is effectively tortured into becoming a weapon of the dark side.
As seen in Charles Soule's work The rise of Kylo Rena deranged Ben Solo clutches a blue Jedi crystal in his fist, staining it until it bleeds and turns red. in Soule Star Wars #35Luke learned about bleeding while searching for a new crystal in Christophsis: “A practitioner of the dark side pours his anger, pain, and fear into the crystal, leaving it quivering in red agony…like a feedback loop.”. Thus, it is confirmed that the owners of bloody cyber are in constant pain due to their corruption.
Sith Acquires Kyber Crystals The Darkest Way
There is a dangerous ritual behind it
Soule 2017 Darth Vader series confirmed the sinister rite of passage behind the Sith's acquisition of a crystal. After some time, Anakin Skywalker became Vader Revenge of the SithEmperor Palpatine instructed his apprentice to kill the surviving Jedi. Darth Vader would later claim the Jedi crystal as his own before shedding blood on the first crimson-bladed lightsaber. After hunting down and killing his Jedi Master Kirak Infil'a, Vader did as his master commanded and claimed the green kyber for himself, following the ancient traditions of countless Sith before him.
During the corruption of his crystal, Darth Vader received a Force vision (which he rejected, of course) that showed him an alternate path through which he could attempt to redeem himself. Regardless, it's clear that the ritual of bleeding a slain Jedi's crystal is crucial to testing the Sith's commitment to the dark side of the Force. In Darth Vader's case in particular, he was as tortured as the crystal he tainted, supporting the claim that the Sith Lords and their corrupted crystals coexist in dark circles of pain.
Acolyte Reveals Sith Bleeding Kyber For The First Time
We finally got to see how a cyber bleeds out in live action
Acolyte's ending gave viewers their first look at lightsaber bleeding. The scene where Osha, a former Jedi Padawan, flared up with anger and rage against her former master, Sol, was amazing. He swung his lightsaber against it and its blade gradually turned from the traditional blue to blood red. By performing this act, Osha proved herself worthy of the attention of a Sith Lord who called himself a stranger and was looking for a potential apprentice.
Bleeding is clearly required Physical contact between force sensitive and kyber crystalIt explained why Anakin's lightsaber didn't turn red Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Surprisingly, there was no sign of the pain and agony seen before when the kyber bled. It's reasonable to assume that the previous examples involved conflicted characters, with Osha wholeheartedly committed to the dark side.
The Sith Aren't The Only Ones With Red Lightsabers
Others learned to bleed their knives
It is important to note that red-winged lightsabers are not exclusive to the Sith, but rather are symbolic of the dark side on a larger scale. For example, before Kylo, the true leader of the Knights of Ren wielded a red lightsaber. Additionally, High Republic corrupted Jedi Dagan Gera bled his own lightsaber crystal as seen in the photo. Jedi: Survivor Game from Respawn. Any dark side wielder has the potential to bleed cyber using their darkest emotions.
How a Jedi can “cleanse” the Kyber
Ahsoka proved how it could be done
It is possible to purge a bleeding cyber from the dark side. This is known to have been done at least three times: by a Jedi named Orla Jareni during the High Republic, by Luke Skywalker in recent comics, and most famously by Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka successfully defeated the Imperial Inquisitors and claimed their kyber crystals for herself. Meditating through the Force, he successfully cleansed them of their darkness, turning them into a beautiful and bright white. In Star Warseven the darkest movements can be corrected.
Ahsoka Tano
Anakin Skywalker's apprentice Ahsoka Tano was a skilled Padawan who served during the Clone Wars. Ahsoka left the Jedi after becoming disillusioned with the Jedi Council, but returned to serve at the Siege of Mandalore at the end of the Clone Wars. He survived Order 66, became a rebel agent during the Dark Ages of the Empire, and his adventures continue during the New Republic. Unable to stop Grand Admiral Thrau from returning, Ahsoka was last seen stranded in a galaxy far, far away.
