In 2019, news broke that a Hulk Hogan biopic starring Chris Hemsworth was in the works and would direct. Joker Directed by Todd Phillips. But in the end, he fell through the cracks for one simple reason. At least according to Hogan himself.
The wrestling star talked about what happened in an interview he gave recently. PBD podcast. Things turned sour when Netflix, which was in charge of the production, allegedly missed a payment to Hogan in the process. “They missed a beat in the contract,” he said. “There was a payment that wasn't made at the right time.”
It was definitely an exciting project to bring the project to life while working with him. Joker Writer Scott Silver works with John Pollono to bring his story to life. “The script was amazing,” Hogan admitted. “When I read it, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is really good.’ At the time, I was in an environment where I was telling him the positive things about wrestling and the negative things about wrestling. [I] I spent about three years with this writer going back and forth. And when I read it, it was very, very dark.” He acknowledged that this darkness might be “what the public wants to see.”
Add in a Marvel superstar like Chris Hemsworth and the idea of what this could be gets even bigger.
“There was talk that Chris Hemsworth had never played a real person before and could possibly win an Oscar, which is very powerful,” Hogan said. Ultimately, however, the alleged missed payment caused Hogan to abandon the project. “I was just moving forward at the time, and when they missed an appointment work-wise, there was an option for me to opt out, and I did that,” he recounted.
Meanwhile, Phillips said: Diversity in August “your love”[d] “What were we trying to do with the Hogan movie that got shelved,” he said, but he's not interested in moving forward with it either. “It's not going to come together for me,” he said.
