Some cast members felt that, despite its darkness, it was an overall satisfying conclusion and tonally fit the series. Justin H. Min:
I think it's a satisfying ending. Obviously, it's a darker ending, but I think it fits our show. I think it would be a little weird if it was all rainbows and butterflies for Umbrella Academy.Elliot Page:
“satisfied” [with the resolution] it's just a stretch in terms of gravity and sadness, but in terms of pure plot, I was like, “Yeah, that makes sense.”Emmy Raver-Lampman:
I don't like it, but it makes sense.
“Darkness” wasn't the problem with the end of Umbrella Academy
Story Issues Kept The Ending From Working
The premise of the somewhat dark ending makes sense given the development Umbrella Academy's characters, the story's more realistic take on superheroes, and the ultimate sacrifice is the only way to finally put an end to all the apocalypse and messed up timelines the Hargreaves have caused. The bigger problem with the show's ending is that it doesn't feel earned. Compared to previous seasons, season 4 felt rushed and struggled to balance the various subplotsmany of these eventually became irrelevant.
While the ending is tonally consistent with the rest of the series, season 4's pacing issues, its wasted narrative potential, and unnecessary storylines keep the conclusion from working as intended.
The reduction of the episode count from the standard ten episodes to just six had a negative impact because he didn't give enough time to develop his story properly and naturally establish the sacrifice of the Hargreaves. The original premise that the Hargreaves sisters would have to travel through a timeline without their powers was dropped after the first episode. A lot of time was then spent on an arc with Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Quinn (George Tchortov) that felt regressive to Klaus' development and had little impact on the ending.

Justin H. Min is right that a purely happy ending would be tonally jarring Umbrella Academy. While the ending is tonally consistent with the rest of the series, season 4's pacing issues, its wasted narrative potential, and unnecessary storylines keep the conclusion from working as intended. Especially with the quality of previous seasons, this is disappointing Umbrella Academys ending was not as satisfying as it could have been.
