IBM Wins $44.9M Case Against Zynga Alleging Patent Infringement

News reports that technology company IBM has won its lawsuit against mobile developer Zynga, which it sued for patent infringement in 2022.

Two years ago, IBM claimed THE FarmVille creator was abusing its “core” web technology, including data acquisition and analysis. The two companies have reportedly been negotiating a license since 2014, but talks have repeatedly failed.

At the time, Zynga was one of several Internet companies IBM was taking legal action against. Earlier this year, a lawsuit was filed against e-commerce site Rakuten. fixedwhile another against the pet food seller Chewy was completely abandoned.

Documents show that the federal court found that several Zynga games fell within the bounds of patent infringement. The specific titles listed include the Farmville sequels, Crossword with friends, AND Wizard of Oz Slots.

With the court ruling in its favor, IBM was awarded $44.9 million in damages. However, Zynga spokesman Alan Lewis argued that those patents were invalid and said the developer (and its owner Take-Two) plan to appeal the verdict.
