Now, his design has been taken to a new level, as the Joker is caught in a wild fire that gives him a terrifying new look.
Readers get their first look at the Joker's new look Batman: The Dark Ages #5 by writer Mark Russell and artist Michael Allred. In this story, as part of his plan to destroy Bruce Wayne, Ra's al Ghul destroys Arkham Asylum, with Bruce's love interest trapped inside. Despite Batman's best efforts, 32 people die, with a favorite local comedian on the dead list.
Amazingly, the comedian actually survives and ends up at a local store. It is here that he reveals his new look, with his skin having more of a melted texture by being trapped in the fire. Apparently, she also uses make-up to hide the severity of her burns.

Instead of being a mad inventor who uses hats to literally control people's minds, the Mad Hatter is a religious leader who uses his words to influence people. Ra's al Ghul is not the leader of a centuries-old clan of assassins; instead of he is a military leader who served in Vietnam and taught Batman under him. Likewise, the Joker was not thrown into a vat of acid in the presence of Batman, but instead was caught in an explosion caused by Ra's.

An interesting detail about this universe is that it may be one of the first times Joker was created in Arkham Asylum. Typically, Joker is created elsewhere, such as at Ace Chemicals. Only after his first appearance was he sent to Arkham Asylum. Another major difference is fact The Joker has nothing to do with Batman. Granted, he's only blasted because of the events surrounding Batman, which he has no way of knowing. This Joker may be unique in that he may not be as interested in Batman as his usual comments.
Regardless of the universe, the Joker is Always Scary
The Joker has consistently been one of the scariest villains in Batman's rogues gallery, both because of his sadistic crimes and because clowns are generally scary.
