But one man seems to have turned his back on everything he stood for and joined Waller's mission. But is this Justice League member really that far gone, or does he have other plans? And what will this mean for their future?
Green Arrow launches the Justice League to help Amanda Waller
In Absolute Power #1 By Mark Waid, Dan Mora, Alejandro Sánchez and Ariana Maher, the world is going to hell all at once. All over the world, civilians start attacking any heroes, labeling them as threats and enemies. The reason for the sudden and unexpected turn of the crowd? Waller floods the internet and media with AI-driven videos of superheroes attacking innocent people around the world. In the order hall, Waller meets with the conspirator Failsafe and devises the next phase of their plan.
To combat the misinformation that tarnishes the heroes' reputations, each masked hero appears publicly to counter Waller's story. Unfortunately, Waller has just released the entire Amazo crew, Task Force VII. Androids track down the strongest heroes and steal their abilities. Superman is depowered as a thug shoots him, causing the Man of Steel to fall from the sky. Other heroes, including powerful ones like the Spectre, are depowered in droves. Batman secretly tries to gather his friends until he was cut off by an old ally from the Justice League.
Oliver Queen makes it clear he is no longer on the side of the heroes and the Green Arrow is complete”Team Waller“. Oliver notifies anyone listening to the hidden frequency of any potential escape blockage. The Multiverse, the timestream, the Microverse, and even space are now forbidden thanks to Waller. Green Arrow makes it perfectly clear: Now there's nowhere for any superhuman to run, and the Amazons that go after the remaining heroes destroy the power of any hero they encounter forever.
Green Arrow's Sudden Betrayal Isn't So Sudden
While Batman is shocked to hear this coming from Green Arrow, so is everyone watching Green Arrow series saw the Queen's turn coming a mile away. The Emerald Archer disappeared after the Dark Crisis in Endless Lands. But during the Queen's attempts to return home, she discovers that Team Arrow's reunion could potentially lead to one of the worst disasters ever. However, it turns out to be a lie concocted by Merlyn, the Queen's enemy. However, Helping Merlin from the shadows was Amanda Waller.
Waller installed technology on various members of the Green Arrow family as part of his plan to manipulate the Queen. His plan worked, and as soon as the Queen returned home, she followed Waller to her new base, the Hall of Order. After capturing the queen, Waller leveled with the hero and told her that he was planning a war against the metahumans and needed powerful allies on his side. In exchange for working for him, Waller promised Green Arrow that he would keep his family together and safe.
Oliver agreed, and Waller immediately put him to work, using him to break into the old Justice League base and recover the Sanctuary files on the DCU's greatest heroes. When asked about his decision to help Waller, Green Arrow told his allies that he was simply running a “long con” against Waller. But when he released the mother of his child from prison Arsenal is captured by Green Arrow, who renounces his superhero identity and gives everything to Team Arrow..
John or Not, Green Arrow has completely tarnished his rep
Those who do not continue Green Arrow can read Absolute Power #1 and be completely shocked by Oliver's decision to betray his friends and allies. But the Queen's persistence helped rationalize her choice, and even implies that it was all part of a plan she had secretly hatched to prevent Waller from achieving his endgame. To be fair, it's pretty hard to believe that the DC Universe's most notorious left-wing hero would actually want to work with a fascist like Waller (at least without any mind control affecting Green Arrow).
And yet the question must be asked. Even if Green Arrow doesn't go full villain, do his intentions matter when he helps coordinate one of the biggest attacks on the superhero community? Without telling anyone, not even his friends and family, Oliver helped Waller obtain sensitive information and use that information to disempower the heroes on an unprecedented scale. Batman went to hell with the Justice League when his unexpected belongings were stolen at the “Tower of Babel”. but that's nothing compared to the damage done by Green Arrow.
Of course, Green Arrow is probably a double agent and thinks he can probably stop Waller by sticking close and waiting for the right moment. But by not telling anyone, especially his closest allies in the League, he risked everyone's lives. Superman was almost killed and if in the last chapter Absolute Power #1 is any indication, Jon Kent's troubles are just beginning. The DC Universe is a nightmare right now, and even though everything is back to normal, Many of Green Arrow's Justice League comrades won't soon forget it.
Can Green Arrow bounce back from this betrayal?
True, Green Arrow is not the first person to betray the team. Batman was released after “Tower of Babel”. Zatanna returned after her mind-wiping scandal came to light in an identity crisis. No matter how angry their partner is, they can forgive him in the end. Of course, it depends on how Absolute Power shakes out. So far, no one has died. But if deaths do occur, Green Arrow will have blood on his hands. Either way, it'll probably be a long time before Oliver Queen is there Justice League good luck again.
