Katy Perry Goes Viral With Risky VMA Performance With Rapper Doechii

Katy Perry went viral for her daring performance alongside rapper Doechii at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday night.

Old American Idol the judges literally flew into the awards ceremony, descending on a wire from the ceiling of New York’s UBS Arena before taking the stage, and performed a nine-minute mashup of their biggest hits before accepting the 2024 Video Vanguard Award. Amidst shortened versions of “Dark Horse,” “E.T.”, “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “I Kissed a Girl” and “Firework,” among others, Perry was joined onstage by rapper Doechii, who introduced the duo’s collaboration “I’m His, He’s Mine.”

While Perry showed off a variety of physical moves during her performance, many viewers focused on the single moment she shared with Doechii. Clips of the performance quickly began circulating on social media, with many surprised by how provocative the pairing was.

Opinion on the song was divided between those who grudgingly admitted that it “sounds like a hit” and those who decried the overly sexualized choreography that has been used for centuries to promote a new song. “She's so desperate that she needs this imagery to sell her music,” @rroobb3 wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “That's the problem when you get away from music being just sound. If this was on the radio I'd jump to the next station.”

“But that camera angle was taken from underneath the stage 🧐,” another user claimed of a particularly risky shot.

Some singled out Perry's partner Orlando Bloom for his muted reactions during her performance. “Orlando Bloom's reaction to Katy Perry shaking her butt cheeks, spread eagle, doing scissors, and kissing a girl at the #VMAs was pretty iconic,” @andysignore wrote on X.

“Anyone else think Orlando Bloom doesn't know the song 'California Gurls'?” another user asked.

“I'm His, He's Mine” will be released alongside Perry's latest album on September 13. 143Watch the full MTV VMAs performance below.
