Laphroaig is known for its whiskey with a distinctive character that symbolizes Islay. But for its newest range, Laphroaig is showcasing the people who have helped make it one of the world's most recognized Scotch whiskey brands. The first installment of the new Strong Character range is a 33-year-old single malt that pays tribute to the distillery's co-founder, Donald Johnston.
Aged in a blend of American oak and European oak ex-sherry casks, Laphroaig Strong Character Chapter One is said to reflect the determined vision that led Johnston and his brother Alexander to establish the distillery in 1815.
The whiskey offers a blend of smoky and bold flavors, starting with aromas of sweet toffee, heather honey, freshly baked sourdough, crème brûlée, apple pudding and pickled brine. Notes of Christmas cake and holiday spices combine with the smoky peat tones the distillery is known for, entering the palate with distinct savory notes of smoked ham and seared mackerel, as well as a Sherry influence that can be found throughout the finish.
“Whiskey drinkers have a growing appetite for not only the flavors but also the story behind the distillery,” says Teddy Joseph, global brand ambassador for Laphroaig. “Laphroaig has such a rich and interesting history and the new Strong Characters range offers whiskey drinkers the chance to dig deeper and discover the pioneers and stories that made the brand what it is today. “We were also lucky enough to work with Bill Bragg and his atmospheric images capture the history and spirit of life on this uncompromising island.”
British artist Bill Brag created the illustrations for the collection, using his signature black and white images to depict the brothers' trials, tribulations and triumphs.
“Donald's story is unique. “I drew a lot of him as this falling figure because it's such a dramatic and shocking ending to his story, an end to essentially dedicating his life to his craft,” says Brag. “All my projects start in black and white. People often see Laphroaig as an unapologetic spirit in an elegant whiskey.” I think it was a really good match for this project as it describes it as a combination of peat, rough and smooth and I wanted to keep some of that in the drawings, boldness meets elegance which suits the character of the whiskey perfectly.
Bottled at 43.8 percent ABV, Laphroaig Strong Characters Chapter One comes with a price tag of around $1,285.
