Major Meat Recall Affects Popular Walmart and Trader Joes Items

Almost 10 million pounds of meat were recently recalled due to possible Listeria contamination in frozen dinners, fresh salads and at popular grocery stores like Trader Joe's, Walmart, Target, Amazon Fresh and Kroger, as well as brands like Jenny Craig.

Approximately 9,986,245 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products may have been infected with the virus, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released Wednesday. Listeria monocytogenes.

People who consume the bacteria may experience muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and more in as little as a few hours. While most people with Listeriosis do not need treatment, other people with more severe symptoms such as headache, confusion, and loss of balance may need to be treated with antibiotics.

According to the report, the affected meat and poultry products were produced between June 19, 2024 and October 8, 2024 and shipped to establishments and distributors across the country before being distributed to restaurants and institutions.

USDA has determined that ready-to-eat chicken products are the source of Listeria monocytogenes. The organization published a 203-page list of affected products, although it is not completely comprehensive. The labels include products from the aforementioned organizations as well as stores such as HEB, 7 Eleven, Giant Eagle, Meijer, RaceTrac, Publix and Wegmans. Brands affected include Dole, Rao's, Atkins and Signature Select.

The contaminated products initially contained establishment numbers “51205 or P-51205” within or below the USDA inspection mark, but the company emphasized that further processing or distribution may cause them to carry different numbers. Most affected products are ready-to-eat salads, rice or pasta bowls with chicken or turkey.

While there have been no reports of adverse reactions from consumption of these products, it is important to check any products you are concerned may have been affected. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms associated with Listeria infection, be sure to contact a healthcare professional for more information about the best way to proceed.
