Warning: Contains SPOILERS for The Incredible Hulk Annual 2024 #1!Thanos He is perhaps the greatest villain in the Marvel Universe, not just because he is insanely powerful and has shaken the entire cosmos several times, but also because he truly loves killing and mayhem. However, this shouldn't mean that Thanos can't be defeated or even undone, as Marvel Comics just named a hero who has what it takes to do so.
In The Incredible Hulk Annual 2024 #1 by Derek Landy and Geoff Shaw, Thanos hunts down a new Stonebearer as he hopes to retrieve all of the Infinity Stones to become omnipotent once again. This comic is the latest addition to the ongoing series Infinity Watch SagaA story that is told between a series Annual 2024 comics. In this work, the Mind Stone found its bearer and gave that person god-level telepathic powers, and his name is Worldmind.
When Thanos finds the Worldmind, the Stone Bearer hits Thanos with a psychic attack so powerful that it brings the Mad Titan to his knees. Worldmind explains that the only reason Thanos is hunting for the Infinity Stones — and the reason he's a villain in general — is because of his childhood trauma. As such, Worldmind said that Thanos would alter his childhood memories, erase that trauma, and thereby reshape who Thanos is on a fundamental level, defeating him and even bringing him back in the process.
The mind stone itself is the 1 'Hero' who can defeat Thanos
Each Infinity Stone knowingly has Heroic “Hosts”, making the Stones The Heroes Themselves.
Worldmind's plan to destroy Thanos is solid, as the Mad Titan was completely immobilized while the god-level psychic took root in his mind. Unfortunately, Thanos gathered the strength to get rid of him and killed Worldmind before the hero could finish the job. But just because it didn't work this time doesn't mean it won't work in the future, especially if the Mind Stone chose an already powerful telepath as its host.
If someone like Charles Xavier, Emma Frost, or Jean Gray were imbued with the power of the Mind Stone (instead of someone like Worldmind, who only became a telepath once possessed by the Stone), it's a fair assumption that they could. Succeeding where Worldmind failed. They would already have a mastery of telepathic power and could change everything about Thanos in a split second with the cosmic enhancement of the Mind Stone.
The Infinity Stones as Heroes is a Great Concept That Needs to Stay
Above is the reading order for all
Infinity Watch Saga
details the origin of the Infinity Stones as legitimate Marvel Comics heroes!
One of the great things about this “one hero” who can take down Thanos is that this hero is the Mind Stone, especially since the same is true of the other Infinity Stones. These sentient cosmic artifacts deliberately choose heroes to inhabit, and when these heroes come together as a team, their individual power grows exponentially. The Infinity Stones have been used by heroes and villains alike, there seems to be no say in the matter. Now, Marvel Comics is giving them a voice and they've decided to become space heroes – and it's just a really cool concept.
The Infinity Watches have a chance to be the greatest team of heroes in the Marvel Universe. Only time will tell how their story unfolds, but in short order, one of the heroes of Infinity Watch, the Mind Stone, has already figured out how to defeat (and even redeem). Thanos permanently – may need to find a better host to really get the job done.
