Michael Che Talks About Colin Jost's 'SNL' Prank That 'Made Him So Annoyed'

Michael Che and Colin Jost were sitting next to each other Weekend Update has been at the forefront for ten years and has become one of the longest-running mainstays of the iconic brand. Saturday Night Live episode in the show's half-century history. But at one point, Che says he was on the verge of leaving the show because of a joke Jost wanted to make on air.

The comedy duo spoke about the incident in a recent interview Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade podcast. When asked if there was ever a time when someone wanted to “kick” [their] Che commented on a joke from the season 40 finale, which aired in May 2015:

“Yeah, I guess it was the ‘jalapeño thing.’ I was pretty mad about that,” Che said. “You were just mad because it worked so well,” Jost replied.

Not even a year had passed since they'd been together, and it was their first season finale as a duo. Weekend Update table. Jost relayed a local news story that had a joke at the end, saying, “Ohio police arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend because he ate all her salsa. But when your boyfriend is doing the jalapeño thing, you get mad too.”

Che tried to stop the embarrassing moment before going live, even saying he would leave the show if she told the joke.

“I remember rehearsing when you did that, because I'd never heard it before. I don't remember what the setup was, but the joke was 'the jalapeño thing,'” Che recalls. “And I said, 'If you tell that joke on the air, I'm leaving. I'm leaving the show.'”

To Che's surprise, the joke killed it. “He did it on air and ruined it. And I was so angry. I was so mad. I was like, 'I don't even know what we're doing anymore,'” he admitted.

Jost, always the comedian, said he did it just to upset Che. “If it hadn't been so upsetting, I would have cut it off, to be honest. And then I said, 'I'm definitely, definitely going to do this,'” he said.
