Michael Keaton Explains Why 'Beetlejuice 2' Won't Have Much Beetlejuice

The long awaited after more than 35 years Beetle juice continued, Beetle juice Beetle juiceIt's set to hit theaters on September 6. However, fans may be a little surprised to learn that the titular character won't be on screen for as long as they'd hoped.

All things considered, Beetlejuice only appeared on screen for 17 minutes in Tim Burton's 1988 classic. And as Michael Keaton explains in a new statement, he was “the Ghost of the Night.” GQ In an interview this week, he explained that, given the enduring and overwhelming popularity of the Beetlejuice character, he actually had one condition when he agreed to do the sequel: that Beetlejuice not take up too much space.

“The idea was, no, no, no, you can't fill it with Beetlejuice, that would kill it,” Keaton told the publication. “I don't think the Beetlejuice character drives the story as much as he did in the first movie. He's more of a part of the story in this movie, not like in the first movie, where it's a case of something coming in and driving the story a little bit.”

But while Beetlejuice’s screen time may not be as long or increase at all, Keaton assures us that the character won’t be softened for the relatively sensitive 2024 audience and will continue to be an “amoral pervert.”

“He's a thing. He's more of a thing than a man or a woman, he's more of a thing. And I don't want to be politically correct when I say 'he.' I saw him more as a force than anything else. So, there's definitely a strong male energy, like a silly male energy, which I love,” she explained. “You don't want to touch that because you wouldn't say, 'Well, it's a new year and this thing is acting like this now.'”

Beetle juice 2As the sequel is often referred to, it picks up 36 years after the events of the first film, with the Deetz family returning to the family home after the unexpected death of Charles Deetz. Naturally, it doesn't take long for Lydia's (Winona Ryder) rebellious daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) to stumble upon the mysterious town model in the attic and accidentally open the door to the Otherworld.

In addition to Keaton, Ryder, and Ortega, the cast also includes Catherine O'Hara, as well as newcomers Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe. Watch the trailer below.
