Werewolves returned to comics in 1972 after nearly 20 years of exile. Marvel Spotlight #2, the first appearance of the Jack Russell. The Comics Code Organization banned werewolves, vampires, and other such monsters, but in the early 1970s the rules were relaxed significantly. Along with his contemporary Dracula's Tomb, A wolf in the night It was unlike anything Marvel was publishing at the time. A wolf in the night was filled with darkness and dread and a change of pace from Captain America, Thor and Spider-Man.

Although Jack Russell (The Werewolf by Night) shares the same name as the popular dog breed, co-creator Gerry Conway has repeatedly said he was unaware of the breed.


A cult favorite for decades, the Werewolf made its way to the MCU in a one-hour TV movie that aired on Disney+. The film leaned heavily on the mythology and lore surrounding monsters in the Marvel Universe and brought the character's dark and violent world to life in a visually compelling way. The film also perfectly captured Russell's ongoing conflict with his inner monster. It finally introduced the MCU to perhaps the most important person in Russell's life: Elsa Bloodstone. Elsa and Russell have fought each other a few times, even if they have a little romance.

People around him die horribly and it slowly eats away at his mind. Loo and Davila mix this pathos with blood, gore, and bone, taking full advantage of the freedom they've been given in their Red Band releases. New A wolf in the night takes everything great about the concept and pushes it to the extreme, giving the character the inventiveness it needs.
