Nexon America is laying off workers to pursue an “exciting” intellectual property growth strategy

Nexon America has made an unknown number of layoffs. In a statement sent to Game Developer, the company said the cuts are the result of a reorganization plan that will allow for the formation of a new Western development group.

Nexon is known for developing titles such as Maplestory AND Dave the Diver. Earlier this month, the company converted subsidiary studio Mintrocket into a full-fledged company enable “faster decision making” and implement “simplified business procedures.”

Nexon America was founded in 2005 and provides online and console gaming services for markets outside of Asia. A spokesperson for Nexon said the layoffs will impact a “small number” of employees.

“Earlier this month, our new CEO Junghun Lee outlined a long-term intellectual property growth strategy for both new games and extensions of existing franchises like MapleStory. A key element of the initiative is the hyperlocalization, a strategy to hire teams to adapt our games to suit the tastes of local players in large markets such as Europe and North America. A big step in this process is the creation of the Western Development Group here in Los Angeles, led by the veteran of Nexon Hanbyeol Oh,” the statement read.

“Unfortunately, the reorganization includes the elimination of a small number of roles, with severance packages offered to those who leave. However, Nexon America is now hiring to round out the new development team, including engineers and designers. It's an exciting time for Nexon America and we can't wait to share more about our plan.”

Outlining its new growth strategy during a recent Capital markets briefingNexon said it plans to raise revenue and operating profit to 750 billion yen ($5.2 billion) and 250 billion yen ($1.75 billion) by 2027 as it pursues an ownership growth initiative intellectual who will bring “an avalanche of growth”.

“Nexon’s highly advanced Live Game Operations capabilities have provided consistent, albeit non-linear, growth over the past three decades,” said Nexon President and CEO Junghun Lee. An initiative that can grow our established intellectual property and develop new successes.”

The game developer asked Nexon for more information about the layoffs.
