Hockey player Dylan Holloway had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher after suffering a serious injury during Tuesday night's game.
St. The St. Louis Blues forward was taken off the rink on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital after the airborne puck hit his throat. ESPN Dramatic footage of the moment was captured showing Holloway sliding towards his team's bench, holding his neck. Holloway, a little dazed, continues to feel around his face while the medical staff checks his neck and stabilizes him. He was taken to a nearby hospital for “continuous monitoring” and is currently in stable condition, according to the NHL.
“I was sitting next to him and I saw something happen,” said Holloway's teammate Alexey Toropchenko. Associated Press after the match. “I was a little curious about what was going on. The doctors came and I think everything is fine now. But everyone was worried.”
Blues head coach Drew Bannister told the league it was difficult to hear about Holloway's injury but was proud of his team's resilience. “I guess the only way I can explain this to you is if you're at work, you get a call that one of your family members is sick and has been hospitalized,” he explained.
“Holly is a family member,” Bannister continued. This was a difficult thing. “I thought we had a lot of mental fortitude as a group to pull this off… We were able to get updates on Holly and just kind of take it easy and focus on ourselves.”
As for Holloway's current condition, Bannister says: “From what we've heard, he's doing well. That's a good sign.”
