NYC area to get more snow overnight as winter weather advisory is issued

Feeling déjà vu? The New York City area is set to see snow for the second time this week, albeit less than the first time.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for all five boroughs as well as northeast New Jersey, southern Westchester, and all of Long Island for Saturday from midnight to 10 a.m., with 2 to 4 inches of snow expected.

The city’s emergency management agency has also issued a citywide travel advisory starting Friday and going into Saturday due to the forecast.

Meteorologists predict the storm will move quickly through the area and that most of the snow will fall between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Saturday, according to city officials.

Emergency management officials warned that slippery roadways and slightly reduced visibility could cause minor travel disruptions.

“We are looking for low pressure to pass south and east of the area tonight into Saturday morning and temperatures will be cold enough that we will see snow,” NWS meteorologist Joe Pollina said Friday afternoon.

Temperatures will be cold enough for the snow to stick, starting in the upper 30s early Friday evening and dropping into the upper 20s by Saturday morning, he said.

Winds are forecast to keep at around 5 to 10 mph during the storm, with gusts up to 30 mph.

The city’s sanitation department issued a snow alert and said it would pre-salt “high spots,” side streets and bike lanes. Meanwhile, the city Department of Homeless Services issued a Code Blue Weather Emergency and deployed outreach teams to connect homeless people to shelters.
