NYPD: 6 charged in second stabbing this year at Randall’s Island migrant shelter

Police announced charges Friday morning for six people arrested in connection with a stabbing at the Randall’s Island migrant shelter Thursday afternoon — the same facility where a man was fatally stabbed in another incident earlier this month.

NYPD officials said a verbal argument escalated into physical violence at around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived at the shelter, they found a 24-year-old man with a stab wound to the neck.

The victim was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Harlem in stable condition, and police arrested a total of 18 people at the scene.

A dozen of those arrested were later released with criminal court summonses for disorderly conduct, according to the NYPD. The six remaining individuals were charged with various offenses including assault, menacing, criminal weapons possession, reckless endangerment and tampering with physical evidence.

It’s unclear how the fight started.

All of the suspects are residents of the sprawling tent facility – the city’s largest migrant relief center, capable of housing up to 3,000 new arrivals.

On Jan. 6, 24-year-old Dafren Canizalez was killed at the shelter after he was allegedly stabbed by another resident, 27-year-old Moises Coronado.

Coronado was arrested and charged with murder.
