NYPD: Man randomly slashed inside Rockefeller Center subway station

Police said Tuesday they’re looking for a suspect who slashed a man in the face at a Manhattan subway station as he was buying a MetroCard.

NYPD officials said the random attack happened just after midnight Monday at the 47-50 Street/Rockefeller Center Subway Station in Midtown.

The 24-year-old victim was on the mezzanine level where the card machines are located when the unidentified suspect approached him from behind and slashed the right side of his face with a sharp object, according to police.

Officials said they believe the attack was unprovoked, and the two men didn’t know each other.

The suspect fled the station, and was captured on surveillance video re-entering the subway system at 34th Street/Penn Station, police said.

The victim sustained a severe laceration to his face, and was taken to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue in stable condition.

Police said the suspect was last seen wearing a white hooded sweatshirt and tan-colored pants.

Crime in the city’s transit system saw an uptick in the first quarter of the year compared to 2023. City and state leaders have flooded the system with law enforcement in response, but also say the subways are generally safe.

This is a developing story and may be updated.
