Oath: Chronicles of Empire & Exile, the board game by designer Root, will receive its first expansion

Oath: Chronicles of Empire & Exile, a board game designed by the creator behind Root, is getting its first expansion.

Released in 2021, Oath is a board game for one to six players in which the group attempts to seize, or even share, control of a fictional land. While one player takes on the role of the Chancellor, the others become other agents operating in different regions of the country, aiming to either take on the Chancellor's role or ally with him in the hopes of gaining access to a certain amount of power.

As Chancellor, the player will have access to more resources than everyone else (reflecting his powerful status), but will be forced to constantly defend himself against others. Other players will have fewer resources, but can focus on developing their own strategies against the Chancellor, while keeping a close eye on what their opponents are doing.

In each round, players play cards from their hands, and different cards have different effects. Players will be able to move between different regions of the game world (represented by cards) that will allow them to perform certain actions. If they have troops, players can try to take control of certain areas from the Chancellor or another player, which will give them new advantages. Alternatively, players can try to overthrow the Chancellor by gathering secrets through their own spy network.

When the game ends, players can record the outcome (who won, who is the Chancellor, which areas are under whose control) and use it to set up their next game of Oath, thus creating a campaign they can return to and a history for the game world.

The next expansion for the board game Oath will be called New Foundations and will offer “players new ways to make the game their own.” According to the expansion’s publisher’s official X account (formally known as Twitter), Leather gamesThe expansion “will bring hundreds of new cards and exciting new systems to your games of Oath.”

Cole Wehrle, the creator of Root and designer of Oath, answered In response to user X @ChipRoush’s post asking how much the expansion had been influenced by the development of Arcs: Conflict & Collapse in the Reach, one of Wehrle’s other games: “The new expansion wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for Arcs. We’ve learned a lot!” Wehrle said.

A crowdfunding campaign for Oath: New Foundations will launch on Kickstarter on May 28.
