Odyssey Interactive's transparent prototyping process aims to prevent a repeat of Omega Strikers

Developer Odyssey Interactive has revealed a new project in development called Byte Breaker, and asks players to decide whether he lives or dies.

Asking for feedback is nothing new, and some studies have already done so community groups that help guide a game's development. But Odyssey is intentionally trying to avoid a repeat of its debut title Omega Strikers, which closed its doors last year, just four months after its official launch.

Omega taught the studio “the dangers of keeping things under wraps for too long,” said cofounder Richard Maple. By being more transparent, he hopes to attract more interest (and by extension, more feedback) for his future work.

Maple and co-founder Dax Andrus further explained that the studio has several prototypes in the works. Letting players try out an extremely early prototype Byte build, hopefully to see if it will be successful enough to be worth all the development time it needs.

According to Maple, this approach will be the way forward for “all our future projects. We want to know what you think much, much sooner.”

Odyssey needs players to lead its future

Byte Breaker prototype will be completely public and available to all players. As they test the build (and servers), Odyssey has encouraged people to share their thoughts (and stream or share content) online.

At the same time, the study stressed that this (or whatever) might not ultimately move forward. Even so, Andrus called this “the best way to figure out whether our ideas make sense.”

“We trust you,” he continued, “and we trust your feedback.”
