Olympic Medalist Reveals Controversial Twerk Moment

Canadian pole vaulter Alysha Newman brought the Great White North its first female pole vault medal by winning bronze at the Paris Olympics, breaking a Canadian record in the process. Newman's celebratory dance after her record-breaking jump made headlines, but she's dismissive of any criticism people might have.

The 30-year-old athlete told her story in a new interview New York Post.

“Many people think that I started dancing because of the bronze medal, but I still didn't know that I had a bronze medal, Angelica [Moser] “If there had been another attempt from Switzerland, it could have easily taken my place,” Newman explained. “If you've known me all these years, I've always celebrated after the Canadian record. I mean, I jumped at 4.85 [meter] “I jumped, I broke the Canadian record, and every competition I've jumped in in the past, I've done backflips, I've done dances, I've done everything I can do naturally.”

Newman's admittedly less-than-twerking dance came after he mocked his past injuries by limping around the track at the Stade de France.

“I guess the thing about me pretending to be injured and then dancing, of course everyone calls it twerking, but I laugh because I probably didn't twerk that great compared to some women and men who can twerk better than me, but in the end pretending to be injured was part of the plan, rather than actually twerking, so I laugh because obviously it came out and it's a great chance for people to see another side of me,” she admitted.

Anyone hoping the dance was a sneak preview of what Newman has to offer on OnlyFans will be disappointed. She launched the account in 2021 to document her Olympic experience, as there were no spectators at the Games due to COVID precautions. It quickly became a place to connect with fans on a personal level.

“Originally I was just going to do it for the Olympics and do a 16-day behind-the-scenes stint at the Olympic Village,” Newman said. “It just kind of blew up, so I kept going, kept going for years and doing what I felt comfortable with: Live streaming my workouts, showing my workout routines, my abs — a lot of people want abs —[and] nutrition programs.”

As for those who mock her for her presence on the site or her Olympic dancing, Newman doesn’t care.

“I was always raised not to judge a book by its cover,” he said. “People do what they do because they have to make a living, we have to pay the bills and we have to do what we have to do, and so I am very, very grateful to have a pretty strong mental ability. [health] and has a thick enough skin to keep the negative noise inside its bubble.”

“I was telling my mom, she said, 'You could do this at home in front of four people, or in front of a hundred thousand people, just you,' so we had a good laugh about how that turned into this big moment, [which] “I was bringing a medal to my country,” he concluded.

Time will tell whether Newman will be looking for another victory at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
