Patrick Mahomes Sr., father of three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes, has pleaded guilty to a felony DWI charge. The plea comes just months after the elder Mahomes was arrested during a traffic stop just days before his son is set to play in this year's Super Bowl.
Accordingly TMZThe 54-year-old entered his plea in the case on August 27. He was originally scheduled to stand trial in Smith County, TX. The exact details of the plea agreement remain unclear. His sentencing is scheduled for September 23.
Mahomes Sr. was arrested in February and first faced felony charges in April. Austin American-Statesmancourt documents described a damning scene during Mahomes Sr.’s arrest, including an open 16-ounce beer can in the front seat and the former MLB pitcher admitting to drinking “a couple of beers” at a bar before a fraught field sobriety test. His car’s registration had also expired since September 2022.
This isn't Mahomes Sr.'s first run-in with the law for drunk driving. It's his third DWI charge, following his arrests in South Dakota in September 2008 and in Smith County, Texas in February 2019.
Because of his guilty plea, he is expected to receive five years of probation with the first year of strict supervision. In that scenario, he faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 for the crime if he violates his probation. For the 2019 DWI charge, he received a 40-day sentence, which he reportedly served on weekends.
