Payload Studios lays off 25 percent of its workforce

TerraTech developer Payload Studios has laid off 25 percent of its workforce. Payload CEO and founder Russ Clarke confirmed the news on Linkedin and said the cuts were a result of “struggles plaguing the broader video game industry.”

“We've tried very hard to avoid it, and I won't pretend that we've done everything right in recent years, but ultimately the video game market has been very tough in recent times and shows little sign of improving. Small indies like us have no protection from this other than to nail it every time, which is much easier said than done,” Clarke said.

“The payload will continue to grow and will recover from this point, I firmly believe; but it is a difficult road and will remain so for a long time.”

He added that TerraTechnology and spin-offs TerraTech Worlds will be “maintained and developed without interruption” and implored studios with vacancies to consider those affected by the layoffs.

“We wish the very best to those extraordinary colleagues with whom we have shared this incredible journey, but who we must now, with regret, part,” he continued.

Layoffs and studio closures have become a mainstay in 2024. Thousands of developers across the industry have lost their jobs since the start of the year, including many at major companies like Embracer, Microsoft, Sony, Meta, Take-Two, EA, and more.
