In both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the official Earth-616 comic book canon, Phil Coulson had a reputation as a hero lover. One of the black eyes on his legacy was the “Heroes Reborn” storyline, which saw Coulson return from the dead as a supervillain who used the Pandemonium Cube to banish the Avengers from existence and transform himself into the President of the United States. This is eventually canceled and no one—not even Phil—remembers his misdeeds…except Nighthawk. So when Coulson is resurrected, Nighthawk is eager to put him down for good.
Thanks to his trusty pager, Nick Fury rushes to rescue his friend, but not before falling into Nighthawk's clutches. To protect his friend, Coulson decides it's time to test his untested powers. A dark essence flows from his hands and shines, his eyes darken. Fury, of course, is impressed by the spectacle, but Nighthawk is unfazed, knowing that this is Coulson's first time using powers he doesn't yet fully understand. The issue ends with Coulson illuminating this darkness in Nighthawk's direction.
